Rating: 4.5/5
Alice Feeney’s Beautiful Ugly is a psychological thriller that absolutely lives up to its name. Dark, twisty, and completely immersive, it’s the kind of book that makes you forget the outside world exists. From its bookish setting to its masterful suspense, this story delivers on every level.
Plot Summary:

Beautiful Ugly follows the story of a mysterious author whose life is as intriguing as the books he writes. Set in a world filled with literary intrigue and dark secrets, the novel unravels through the perspectives of complex characters, each hiding truths that could change everything. When a shocking event forces these characters’ paths to cross, layers of deception, betrayal, and haunting memories come to light. With its intense psychological twists and a setting steeped in bookish charm, this story keeps readers guessing until the very end.
What I Loved:
1. The Atmosphere
One of the standout elements of Beautiful Ugly is its moody, suspenseful atmosphere. Feeney has a way of pulling you into the story’s world and wrapping you in tension. The pacing is relentless, so even as the suspense builds, the story moves briskly, keeping you hooked until the final page.
2. The Bookish Setting
A psychological thriller set in a world steeped in books? Yes, please! Feeney creates a dark, almost claustrophobic setting that feels both eerie and oddly comforting for bibliophiles. The story’s ties to books and storytelling add a rich, layered texture that makes the unraveling of secrets even more satisfying.
3. The Twists
If you’ve read Alice Feeney before, you know she’s the queen of unexpected twists, and this book is no different. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the plot takes a sharp turn, leaving you reeling. There were moments where I literally gasped—it’s that good.
Why It’s Not a Full Five Stars:
While the story is compelling, a couple of plot points felt slightly rushed. It’s not enough to detract significantly from the overall experience, but I found myself wanting a bit more depth in certain areas.
Final Thoughts:
Beautiful Ugly is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers, especially those who love a story that blurs the line between books and real life. It’s gripping, atmospheric, and packed with twists that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you’re looking for a thriller that’s equal parts mind-bending and bookish, this one should be at the top of your list.

I enjoyed Daisy Darker so I might give this one a try too even though psychological thrillers aren’t generally my thing.
It’s most like Daisy Darker (of her books), so if you liked that one – you should like this one too.
That’s great. I’ll add it to my list of books to get from the library .
I can’t wait to pick this up!! Have a hold on it at the library, and it says I’m 1st in line!!
I love the title and the cover, but her books normally make me head hurt too much, because of all the twists! 😂
Perfection💜
I love a good psychological thriller, and this author’s been on my list to try for a while. Great review, Tessa!
I keep seeing this everywhere. It’s first time I saw a thriller with bookish setting. Great review!
I absolutely love psychological thrillers. I’m listening to beautiful ugly right now and enjoying it so much. One of my favorites was First Lie Wins by, Ashley Elston. I had to buy the book because the audio I couldn’t keep up with.
