About the Author
D.L. Cary is a Christian suspense and clean-thriller author who loves delivering pulse-pounding intrigue without the profanity or graphic violence.
His debut series, The Veil Chronicles, drops you into covert conspiracies and spiritual warfare while championing themes of redemption, justice, and hope. If you enjoy inspirational fiction, redemptive suspense, or spiritual thrillers you can share with the whole family, you’re in the right place.
He calls Alabama home, where he lives with my best friend (and wife), Heile. Before that, they lived in North Carolina. Finishing up their crew is a rambunctious group of dogs and cats, with Alex, an orange tabby, being the newest addition.
Every page he writes is fueled by faith and by readers who crave values-driven stories where hope endures, and justice prevails.
My Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Maria’s Shadow is a tense, sprawling political thriller that weaves together corruption, trafficking, and the desperate pursuit of justice. At the heart of the story is Maria, a young migrant mother whose defiance sparks a dangerous chain of events. Her sister Rosa’s search for answers, Detective John Jefferson’s haunted determination, and Agent Marcus Carter’s grit all collide in a battle against “The Veil,” a powerful, shadowy network that thrives on manipulation and secrets.
What stood out to me most was how vividly the book depicted both the human cost of corruption and the resilience of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. Maria’s fight for her child, Rosa’s bravery, and Sarah Jefferson’s quiet strength added so much emotional depth. These women grounded the action in something deeply personal and heartbreaking, making the stakes feel all the more urgent.
The writing is immersive—rich with sensory detail and cinematic imagery. Whether it’s the blistering heat of the Baja desert, the quiet moments between Sarah and baby Mateo, or the high-stakes political maneuverings in Washington, DC, the prose paints everything in sharp relief. I especially loved the chapters set in North Carolina. Since it’s close to home for me, those passages pulled me in even deeper and gave the story an extra sense of familiarity.
But I have to mention a few things that pulled me out of the story. While the plot is big and bold, I wish we had more insight into the main characters’ inner lives. I wanted to feel what they felt, but there was a distance that kept me from fully connecting with them. On top of that, the characters are often referred to by their full names, almost as if they’re being introduced again and again. This became distracting and added to that sense of distance.
And then there’s the ending. It’s a huge open ending, with the overall storyline left unresolved. It left me feeling unsatisfied. I’ve never cared for cliffhanger endings (to the point of soapbox moments over it), and I tend to prefer a soft conclusion—something that ties the book together while still leaving the possibilities of a series open.
Still, the plot twists landed with impact (with at least one reveal being especially shocking), and the final pages left me unsettled in the best way, even as I wished for more resolution.
Overall, Maria’s Shadow is a powerful, layered thriller—equal parts political intrigue and human story. I cared deeply about the characters, especially the women whose courage cut through the darkness, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages even when the narrative grew heavy.

One response to “Maria’s Shadow by D.L. Cary”
Some biblical scenes are more graphic than the ones that are produced by modern literature. No wonder it’s the number one bestseller!
