The Wrong Victim by Allison Brennan is the third book in a series that can be read as stand alones. I love the team, and I have loved the other two books, so as you can imagine, I’m looking forward to starting this one today.

A bomb explodes on a sunset charter cruise out of Friday Harbor at the height of tourist season and kills everyone on board. Now this fishing and boating community is in shock and asking who would commit such a heinous crime—the largest act of mass murder in the history of the San Juan Islands. Was the explosion an act of domestic terrorism, or was one of the dead the primary target? That is the first question Special Agent Matt Costa, Detective Kara Quinn and the rest of the FBI team need to answer, but they have few clues and no witnesses. Accused of putting profits before people after leaking fuel endangered an environmentally sensitive preserve, the West End Charter company may itself have been the target. As Matt and his team get closer to answers, they find one of their own caught in the crosshairs of a determined killer.

For the first 75% of Man Down by James Goodhand, I wondered where the book was going and if I really wanted to go there with it. But then the last 25% wowed me, and I was so glad I stuck it out. I read it for a The Write Reads blog tour but I’m not sure if it’s going to be offered in US markets. It’s already out in the UK but it’s not even a blip on US Amazon’s radar, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Genre: YA Psychological Thriller-ish / Contemporary with a supernatural suspense angle
  • Pages: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Penguin

Will Parks needs to man up. A man stands. A man fights. A man bleeds. These are the first lessons you learn in a town where girls are objects, words are weak and fists do the talking. Will’s more at home in the classroom than the gym, and the most important woman in his life is his gran. So how can a boy who’s always backed away from a fight become the hero who saves the day? Because a disaster is coming. One that Will can prevent. But only if he learns the most important lesson of all: sometimes to step up, you have to man down.

Breath Less by Amy McCulloch was posted about on a NetGalley Facebook group, so I grabbed it. It’s already out in the UK but it’s not coming out in the US until May. The people on Facebook thought it was very good, so I’m eager to start it.

  • Genre: Thriller
  • Pages: 342 pages
  • Publisher: Anchor (Doubleday Books)
  • Publication Date: May 3, 2022
There’s a killer on the mountain … Journalist Cecily Wong is in over her head. She’s come to Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world, to interview internationally famous mountaineer Charles McVeigh on the last leg of a record-breaking series of summits. She’s given up everything for this story—her boyfriend, her life savings, the peace she’s made with her climbing failures in the past—but it’s a career-making opportunity. It could finally put her life back on track. But when one climber dies in what everyone else assumes is a freak accident, she fears their expedition is in danger. And by the time a second climber dies, it’s too late to turn back. Stranded on a mountain in one of the most remote regions of the world, she’ll have to battle more than the elements in a harrowing fight for survival against a killer who is picking them off one by one.

What are you reading? Do you love it?

The Wrong Victim sounds intriguing, and I like that although it’s part of a series, the books can be read as standalones. I’ll be looking forward to your review!

Man Down is on my TBR but I’m hearing so many mixed things about it!!

I didn’t really care for the first 75-80% of the book but the last little bit really made up for that – for me. So thought-provoking and really reframes the whole story.

I am reading a genre I don’t normally read, but I am really enjoying ”The Crooked Place”. It has the viewpoint of four narratives, and the magic world feels real, even though I know it isn’t. I will put a review on my own site soon. I am only half way through the book, but have empathy for each character in different ways.

So many times I have said that to myself. Lol. Hopefully it will get better.
