#BookBloggerHop | Switching It Up

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Have you ever switched reading genres? If so, why?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I’m not sure I understand this question as intended, but I’ve answered my interpretation of it below:

For those of you who follow my blog regularly (Hi, my blog friends!), you know that I love to switch it up. I started out, almost 4 years ago, thinking I would focus on mystery/thrillers and fantasy, but I’ve always read a mix of genres and so that quickly changed. Actually, there is no genre that I haven’t read at some point in my life.

If I read any one genre for a string of too many books, I find that I just have to have a change. Books start becoming too predictable, I lose the words to talk about them in a unique way, and I just grow discontent. I desire change – I thrive off of it. Luckily for my husband, that doesn’t extend to partners in life, but really for everything else. I move furniture around on a regular basis, I change my blog around every now and again, I like changing up what I eat often – you get the picture.

My favorite weeks are the ones where each book I’m reading is from a different genre. Those are the weeks when I’m a very content reader.

Have you ever switched reading genres? If so, why?

Same 😊 Switching it up is how I avoid reading slumps.

Switching it up is so helpful.

I’m the same Tessa, it’s very unusal for me to keep reading the same genre it just doesn’t work for me. However I did binge listen to the whole Rivers of London series this year, which was very, very unusal as I never ever do that!

I’ve done that a few times but before I began reviewing. It’s kind of fun sometimes but I have also grown tired of a series quickly from doing that.

I did that with Victoria Schwab last month, but they are rather short books. It can be such fun to binge!

I like to read all genres too, even if I read more of some than others. I like having the variety and stops the books all feeling the same 😊

      Very true!

I feel the same if I read one genre at a length and that’s I love to switch between genres. It also made me see what genre are my favorite and gives pure pleasure.

      Definitely ❤️

I enjoy reading lots of different genres. I think my favourite is fantasy and that’s what I buy most of but I love thrillers and contemporary reads too.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      Me too!

  6. BonnieReadsAndWrites Avatar

Although I have my favorites, I read/review most genres as well.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

It’s nice to vary it from time to time or regularly.

I mostly read period (second world war, 1st world war family drama) Romance, I think they would be classed as, but I’ve recently switched to thrillers. It is because I am writing a thriller, and need to know how to structure my story. I also read fantasy the last two books, just because I picked the first one up at a Tesco, charity book shelf. I liked it so much, I brought the sequel.

It sounds like you’ve been having fun switching it up lately ❤️

Loved your response, Tessa💜 It reveals so much about you.

I’m a self-described eclectic reader, loving just about every genre and somewhat of an interest in what’s remaining. I purposefully mix it up every month so that I never tire or become weary of a genre. About ten years ago, I discovered paranormal romance and urban fantasy and overloaded myself on books in those genres. I walked away, intending to resume but never have fully embraced it again. I don’t ever want this to happen again.

I’ve done that type of thing with longer series – binge read them to a point where I just lost interest. Varying genres is wonderful!

Since I lean toward sci-fi and fantasy, sometimes I need a change of pace and shorter read with a contemporary, rom-com, or mystery/thriller. It gives my brain a much needed break.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      Exactly! I’m the same ❤️

I feel very much the same, though I wouldn’t say I read a wide range of genres either. Too much of any one things gets boring after a while.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      I agree!

I don’t switch genres as much as I would like. I love the women’s fiction/romance genre the best and I tend to stick in my comfort zone. But I do switch from historical to contemporary and sprinkle in some cozy mysteries.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

That’s still a little bit of variety ❤️

Same here, especially if I’ve just binged on a series. When I come up for air, I require a different head space and perspective.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      Totally!

I think it would be rare to find someone, at least someone running or reading book blogs, that exclusively reads one genre. Heck I’m often reading more than one genre at the same time. Keeps it lively 🙂

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      I do too sometimes. ❤️

  14. Julie Anna's Books Avatar

I read from so many genres it just feels like switching things up is in my nature! It has been helping me to narrow down to my favorites though.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

It definitely is in mine 😊

  15. sarasreadingnook Avatar

Love your response! I feel like I’m constantly switching genres. I just pick up whatever I’m interested in – there’s just so much to read about!

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

      So much 😊

  16. simplydreareads Avatar

I mostly read romance and cozy mysteries but I have to change up the tropes all of the time otherwise I get bored! I have the same issues as you had mentioned…everything becomes predictable, the voices all sound the same, blah.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

Definitely switch up tropes. I couldn’t even imagine not.

  17. Carla Avatar

Ditto to your comments, Tessa. I am a very eclectic reader and switch it up all the time. There are a couple of genres I don’t really read such as horror, Sci-Fi and urban fantasy, but I will give pretty much anything else a go. I even switch up formats.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

I like doing that. It keeps my reviews fresher and it holds my attention better if I switch things up regularly.
