Skipping Ahead | #BookBloggerHop #bookish #discussionpost

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Have you ever skipped ahead to read the ending?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

Ordinarily, no I never do this. When I read for pleasure, I prefer to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I often want to see how a book ends before I’m close to finishing, but I just speed up my reading to get there sooner rather than later instead of skipping ahead.

Just like last week , though, the exception to this is when I was in college. Those were the books I would most likely reread (last week’s discussion) but once I got into my last two years of university, it wasn’t unusual for me to have 3 or 4 lit classes per semester. You can imagine the amount of reading I had to do for just one of those classes not to mention multiple classes. I discovered a little trick for when there wasn’t time to reread was to read the ending first and then I could focus on the technical aspects as I read through from the beginning. That saved me so much time and was very successful for me when it came to writing essays and papers on the works of literature.

Do you ever skip ahead to read the ending?

I have skipped ahead a few times in the past and it absolutely ruined the story for me. So, I don’t do it any more.

I prefer not to as well

That sounds like such a handy trick! I’m tempted to file it away for when my kids are older, but I think that depends on whether or not they enjoy reading, haha.

      It’s a very handy tip 😊

No I don’t think I have ever done this, it would spoil the reading for me. I quite often peek to see how many pages in the book but I’m careful not to read anything 😊

I do that too, very very carefully 😄

    2. Lady Tessa Avatar

I always check how many pages! But never in a way where I can see the story.

Nope! Never ever! I might speedread to get to the finale faster if I really need answers but I never skip ahead.

      That’s me too 🤗

I never skip reading, nor even paragraphs that make me uncomfortable. There’s fun in not knowing what will happen next than already knowing the ending or the process of reading hows in predictable books.

      That’s my thinking too!

That’s a great tip glad it was so successful! I’ve joined in again this week, about the most memorable time I skipped ahead!

      I enjoyed your post ❤️

Guilty of skipping to the end sometimes. I like your strategy for college though. That does seem a great idea.

It worked out very well for me.

I must confess that I’ve done this a couple of times. In my defense, I did it because I was scared for the main character and couldn’t take it anymore😬

      Aaawwww…sometimes you’ve just gotta know.

Not generally, but I have once or twice.

I would have actually been surprised otherwise though I don’t know why.

I don’t skip ahead, Tessa. I love the delicious anticipation and not knowing what’s coming. For that reason, once I own a book, I never read the blurb again or look at reviews. The story just gets to unfold. 🙂

      I have a similar mindset ❤️

Why, yes, yes I do. Don’t judge me! Sometimes I can’t wait to know what happens, lol. But it’s not often.

Oh, that’s funny. No judgment here. I’m a “to each his own” kind-of gal ❤️

I have. I always used to read the last few pages when I read physical books. I don’t do it so much now with ebooks but sometimes when I’m struggling with a book I will read the last few chapters. Sometimes that is enough to have me read all the book and sometimes I put the book aside. I’ve occasionally done it when I wasn’t sure a romance would have a HEA ending, and I did it when I just KNEW the book was going to have a sad ending as a way to prepare myself. It didn’t help as I still cried buckets and had to take frequent breaks when it got too much.

That’s interesting- I love that you have very specific strategies. 🤗

I almost always read the ending first. I love spoilers.

    1. Lady Tessa Avatar

I know a few people who do that.

I have never skipped to the end and don’t understand people that do. No point reading the book after that…

It can definitely ruin the story

I have jumped to the end of a book in the past, but not in a long time. I used to get impatient when I was younger and it too longer to finish a book, because life got in the way. I can’t remember the last time I did that though as it will probably ruin the book for me.

If you know the ending, you pretty much know the story. So, I think it makes sense to do it or not do it depending on what’s going on in your life.
