Do you all remember that last October our washing machine died and it took me until the end of the month to get a new one? Well, the new one is now broken. We were doing normal laundry this weekend and during the last load, the machine just stopped draining. So a load of towels is now sitting in my bathtub dripping wet and the washing machine is full of water.
For some reason, the warranty says July, which I have all the proof it was October. But still , technically our warranty ended four days ago. You hear of things like that happening but – I don’t know about you – it just sounds like one of those rare random things. Now, it’s one of our weird random happenstances. Just another headache to add to our list, right?
I’m trying to be calm about it because what can you do? We have a repairman coming out, hopefully Monday – that’s what we scheduled, anyway – and my husband is tinkering with it as I type this up. My daughter is freaking out because she needs to do a load of her work clothes for next week. But, let’s face it, the washing machine could care less.
So, I guess I need to pull out the trusty washboard and metal tub again, but you know what? They don’t sell those anymore. I looked! Go figure!
So, that was my week – how was yours?
Just when I thought I wasn’t going to have any new books this week, two different people from St. Martin’s Pres sent me two very different books, as you will see below.
June 6, 2023
The Bookshop by the Bay is a breezy, escapist beach read from powerhouse bestselling women’s fiction author Pamela Kelley.
Two lifelong friends. One bookshop by the beach. And the summer that could change everything.
Jess loves her work as a high-profile lawyer in the respectable and austere city of Charleston. But when she finds her husband, Parker, has been cheating on her with his assistant, she retreats, with her thirty year-old daughter Caitlin for support, to her childhood home on Cape Cod, in Chatham. Caitlin has always been bright but directionless, looking for her passion but keeps coming up blank. And Jess needs to regroup with the help of good food and wine, the company of her best friend, Allison, and come up with a plan for the future.
Allison’s career has hit a low. After twenty years as an editor for the Chatham magazine, circulation is dwindling and though her boss and long-time friend, Jim, does everything to keep her, she has no choice but to take a step back. With a career on hiatus and her main relationship being with Chris, her ex-husband who is still a good friend, Allison is at a pivotal point in life. Her daughter Julia opened her own artisanal jewelry shop a year prior, and she has the kind of day-to-day fulfillment Allison yearns for.
When Allison stops into her beloved local bookstore one day and learns that the owner wants to sell, a long-held dream turns into a reality, thanks to Jess. Allison and Jess set a plan in motion and what was once a place that held warm childhood memories is now theirs to run. As the two friends, along with the help of their daughters, reopen the doors of the cherished bookstore and adjacent coffee shop to the community, they also open themselves up to the possibility of romance, the bonds of mothers and daughters, and the magic of second chances.

General Garrett Sinclair undertakes a rogue mission in the Sahara Desert to thwart an international nuclear threat in Total Empire, an explosive thriller from A. J. Tata.
When Sergeant Major Sylvester “Sly” Morgan is killed while on a mission, his daughter Zoey tells General Garrett Sinclair that her father’s death wasn’t random. Her father had recorded a high-level meeting between Chinese, American, and French diplomats as they spoke about a plan for a new global government.
The “Chinese-U.S. Partnership”, or CUSP, intends to combine the world’s two largest economies and militaries to usher in a new era of partnership and leadership. But China’s offer has a deadline and penalties for noncompliance. As a safeguard, China has five high tech hypersonic glide vehicles armed with nuclear weapons orbiting the Earth ready to strike. When Zoey disappears in the Eye of Africa, seemingly in pursuit of her father’s killer, Sinclair and Dagger Team are caught off-guard as they scramble to catch up.
Without authorization, Sinclair takes Dagger Team into Dakhla, Morocco as he attempts to save his goddaughter’s life. With too many missions to complete and not enough information, Sinclair and team discover that the Chinese plan is nearly complete. As one nuclear glide vehicle misses Washington, DC but hits Loudoun County, Virginia, Sinclair’s mission in the Sahara is to stop the Chinese from using its ground based laser targeting system before they can more accurately launch the remaining four. Facing insurmountable odds and without support from his government, Sinclair takes his team into the maw of the Saharan death pit, the Eye of Africa.
You may have heard of The Great British Baking Show’s controversial episode designed to celebrate Mexican baked goods. Also, there was a lesser controversary surrounding last week’s episode (I think) because the way they made smores had many Americans up in arms. (They were just too complicated, and I think Americans will never be able to understand calling the cookie/crackers, what we call graham cracks, digestives.) Well we, of course, are watching it on Netflix!

Me too! My husband thinks he spotted the problem and can replace the part himself. The part only cost twenty-something dollars, so if it works – that’ll be awesome!
Oof, that sounds stressful. Something similar happened at home here but instead of our washing machine it was our water filter that cracked and it happened 20 minutes before we were having a bunch of guests over for dinner. Fun times! 😂 I hope you manage to get it all fixed soon though! Also, I stopped watching GBBO since they changed the judges but even I heard of all the controversy. Those s’mores really didn’t look like s’mores as I’m sure we all know them but wow, the people really raged over it, eh! 😂 I hope you have a better week ahead, Tessa!
I had to agree I would never go through all that trouble for a s’more when it probably doesn’t taste any better than the simple normal way but I had to laugh over how serious some took it. Crazy!
The washing machine is the only thing that can go wrong, and you realise how much you use it. I’m watching I Zombie at the moment. Another detective show, I am binge watching.
Oh my goodness! Hopefully the repairman can fix it and it won’t cost too much. I had this happen with a refrigerator last year. Brand new, beautiful, stainless steel refrigerator, and the compressor went out within 3 months! We called Samsung, and they said they don’t send repairmen out to our area, so they gave us our money back and told us to throw the refrigerator out. None of the self-employed repairmen could get the part either so our beautiful useless refrigerator went to the dump. I’ve since learned only Whirlpool appliances can be repaired in our area.
That is very good to know about what brands you can get repaired in your area. I would never have thought about that! Hubby thinks he figured it out and has ordered the part, which was not expensive at all. So fingers-crossed 🤞
It only lasted a year? What a nightmare. I’d be lost without my washing machine! Luckily my parents and aunty live round the corner from me so I’d be at theirs using their facilities 🤣
Hope you find a convenient laundromat nearby till Monday! I also binge watched Netflix and loved Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the legal drama series with an autistic but genius attorney with interesting personal and home challenges. Quite good.
Oh no! Hope that you get your washing machine gets fixed soon. We love watching GBBO and can’t see what the problem is with digestive biscuits😃😃😃
The Bookshop by the Bay sounds like a fun read.
Wow, that’s really had to believe that the washer breaks after a year, let alone out of warranty. I put ours under a service contract with several other appliances but the washer has yet to give me issues after five years. Our last one went about twenty. Unbelievable. Good luck with the repair and let’s hope it’s something simple. Meanwhile, off to the laundromat (no fun but okay with a book!).
Our first washer and dryer set lasted at least 15 years and through 5 moves without once giving us any trouble. We only replaced it because a snake got into the back of the dryer (the poor repairman who discovered that) and it never worked quite as well again. But the washer never gave us any trouble.
I’m so sorry about your washing machine. I hope it’s something simple and inexpensive. I’ve been enjoying The Great British Baking Show too. I enjoy it even with the controversy.
It is such a pain. Hubby thinks he found the problem and ordered a replacement part (which was not expensive). So fingers-crossed he’s right and the new part fixes it🤞
So sorry to hear about your washer, Tessa. Hopefully, it’s an easy fix, a belt or something. I hate it when machines aren’t built to last… or are built to last four days longer than the warranty.
Ugh! I hope they get your washer figured out, but that sucks! I actually had issues with my new washer off and on all summer, and then it went away and I didn’t bother calling them, because it was really just that it would be running when I wasn’t using it. I know my warranty is up on November 15th I think, because that is when the paperwork they send me says. With my luck it will quit right after that. I hope you enjoy your new books and have a good week! https://lisalovesliterature.bookblog.io/2022/10/30/weekly-wrap-up-91-october-30th-2022/
OMWord! Your washing machine debacle sounds horrible! They need to fix it for you and stand by their product. Four days out of warranty is insanity.
I had something similar happen with my LG refrigerator (which I spent a FORTUNE on). I took to Twitter to complain, tagged LG, they saw the tweet and took care of fixing it at no cost. I hope your situation works out for you.
You know, I did that with Instagram once (fussed about my IG account having issues on Twitter – it was just too good to pass up trying) and it totally worked. My account which I hadn’t been able to get into for a week due to some glitch or something was all fixed within hours.
I’m so sorry to hear about your washing machine. That is such a nightmare. Our dryer didn’t work for the first six weeks when we moved into our new place. However, the dryer not working is a big difference from your washing machine. We could still wash our clothes and just hang them up to dry. It was annoying, but doable. I hope your machine gets fixed soon. Since you can’t do the washboard thing, do you have laundromats nearby? They’re a pain, but at least you’ll have clean clothes. Good luck!
It’s such an annoyance. I think we do have laundromats nearby but you know what I found out? Laundromats don’t have websites. I found that very interesting. I thought every business had a website. 😂
Four days after the warranty expired – sounds like you have our luck, lol. Sure hope it’s an easy fix for you. Mae’s right about Twitter. I’ve heard several stories of companies responding when they’re called out. Happy Halloween, Tessa!

What a nightmare, hope it can be fixed & hope you have a great week 😊

I’m familiar with iZombie but I never watched it. I always thought that I would probably enjoy it though.

The closest family, other than my oldest daughter, is over 500 miles away. It definitely would not be as big of a deal if we were closer to them.
It says July? Maybe it really says October 7th, and the person who wrote it is European or Canadian and wrote it backwards 10/7 vs 7/10????
What I’m wondering is if someone bought it before us and returned it but registered it in that small window.
Oh no I hope you can get it fixed and you don’t have to buy a new one! I hope this week is a better one for you!

Fantastic news, hope it arrives quickly and is easy to fix! 🤞

That sounds like an interesting show. I’ll have to take a look at it.

The Bookshop by the Bay sounds like a fun read.
I wonder if they taste like Graham crackers or if it’s a whole different taste.
I’ll ask my daughter who has eaten both😀
I’d truly love to know!
Oh no I’m so sorry to hear about your washer breaking again. I hope y’all are able to get it fixed in a timely manner this time.
Me too! Fingers crossed 🤞

They don’t make ‘em like they used to.

I love the controversy. It’s kind of entertaining in its own way.
Ugh! That must be so frustrating! I hope you’re able to get the machine fixed, Tessa. What a pain!
It is such a pain. Hubby thinks he found the problem and ordered a replacement part (which was not expensive). So fingers-crossed he’s right and the new part fixes it🤞
Oh, that would be great! Fingers crossed for you 🙂

Hubby thinks it’s the drainage pump which is surprisingly not an expensive part. He’s ordered a replacement, so fingers crossed that fixes it!

That’s interesting. I wonder why it does that. 🤔

Hubby seems to have fixed it for a grand total of $23 but my fingers are still crossed just in case.
