What review rating system do you employ?    Plus, Weekly Updates and Birthstone Bookstack #BookBloggerHop #bookish #bookblogger

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

What review rating system do you employ?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I created one based on the one that Edelweiss+ uses. I like how it breaks it down into categories and is based on 10 instead of 5. I then take my overall rating (all of the section ratings totaled and averaged) and convert it to a five-point system for NetGalley, GoodReads, and StoryGraph.

Here’s the sections that I rate:

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Originality8
Writing Quality10
Pace6
Character Development8
‘Couldn’t Put It Down’-ness6
Setting10
All scores, except the overall rating, are on a scale of 1-10. The overall rating is converted to the standard 5-point system.

What review rating system do you employ?

This has really been just a low-key week. The air quality has been setting off all sorts of alarms this week, but since I stay inside during hot, humid weather, it’s not really anything that I notice.

This weekend is a four-day weekend because of the Independence Day holiday on Tuesday. I will be working on my new Instagram photo corner – painting my bookshelves and all, so I’m not going to post any reviews on here Monday or Tuesday (as well as the weekend) to give myself more time to work on it. My husband got me a sprayer for the paint I will be putting on the shelves. So, that should be good for making a big mess.

June has a bunch of birthstones, but my mom always uses pearls as hers, so I went with pearls and did another white book stack (different books)

I love your rating system and really appreciate the time you spend on it. I don’t use one, just recommended or highly recommended, and favourite books of the month.

      Thank you ☺️

My rating system is quite basic. Very subjective in relation to my reading experience as an overall score. 3/4/5 – I never post about a book that I would DNF or allocate 1/2 stars to. Happy painting Tessa 😊

Simple is always good and thank you! I’m just going to try to not paint everything white – just keep it to the shelves 🤣

Oh interesting one! But how do you convert it to a five-star rating? That’s not clear to me.

    1. Tessa Pulyer Avatar

I add up all the scores and divide that by 6 (the number of categories) then I divide that average by 2 (since it’s based on a 10 point scale it just needs to be halved to get the 5 point number)

      1. Laurie Avatar

        Oh yeah, makes sense!

Considering how many reviews I do, I really should have a more concrete system. I go strictly by feeling, but I never give below three stars. If I didn’t care for a book I don’t give a star rating.

I don’t either or just do for the purposes of Goodreads. If one of my reviews shows up here without stars that’s my way of saying it was below three

You know, if you did an entire post on the creation of your Instagram photo corner, you’d probably crash the internet! I could use some insights. Just sayin’…😏

Ratings! I stopped including them in my blog posts at the encouragement and advice of fellow bloggers years ago but do use them on Goodreads. I use a 5-point system there, reserving the 1-star rating for any book I DNF and 2-stars for books i intensely disliked. 5-stars are awarded to books that fully captivate me emotionally (that includes intense anger) and are hard to forget.

I love your “Couldn’t Put It Down’-ness” rating and gravitate to it on your reviews. It’s meaningful and helps when I’m looking for something that will be a big escape. FYI, I find your rating system highly useful.

I use the basic 5 star rating system. Have a wonderful weekend ☕📚☀️💜😊

They’ve been warning us in VT for the air as well.
I like your rating system much more than mine (which is a “how I feel at the moment” 😂).

I hate giving stars for books and my star ratings on Goodreads is a bit hit and miss I think. Have fun painting your shelves. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the result.

I give the book an overall star rating.

Hmm… I hadn’t really thought about my rating system so much until now… Then again I’ve only been posting book reviews for about 2 months. I suppose I mostly have done a “yay or nay” and “worth buying” system. And then I have a list of pros and cons. I try to have both for every book, so it’s at least somewhat balanced, but sometimes I have a hard time coming up with “cons” for books I really like, or think are really useful (since I do mostly nonfiction), and sometimes I have a hard time coming up with “pros” for books that I really despise.

i have a similar rating system that I convert to a 5 star rating. Mine doesn’t include pacing though. And good luck with your painting! Can’t wait to see the new shelves!

  12. Davida Chazan Avatar

My rating system? Well, if it makes me laugh and/or cry, it will probably get 5 stars – depending on how much it makes me laugh and/or cry. If I only laugh/cry a touch, then I take it down between a quarter and a half star. From there downwards, it is all gut feelings. Obviously, that means my ratings might be inconsistent, but that’s me!

  13. Books Teacup and Reviews Avatar

I like your rating system. Mine is pretty simple and it’s based on how much I like the book. My week has been busy and looks like this week will also be the same. Happy reading!
