What did I just finish?
What am I reading next?
My Roommate is a Vampire just looks so funny, and I was part of a virtual author event where the author really sold it to me. I’m starting it later today.
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Pages: 352 pgs
Publisher: Berkley Publishing
Publication Date: August 29, 2023
True love is at stake in this charming, debut romantic comedy.
Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but it’s a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, she’s desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catch—only someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price.
Of course, her new roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is far from normal. He sleeps all day, is out at night on business, and talks like he walked out of a regency romance novel. He also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, cares about her art, and asks about her day. And he doesn’t look half bad shirtless, on the rare occasions they’re both home and awake. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge that definitely weren’t there earlier, Frederick has to come clean…
Cassie’s sexy new roommate is a vampire. And he has a proposition for her.
The Marriage Retreat is very unexpected. It’s one that starts slow but at the halfway point picks up to where I’d want it to be. I have mixed feelings about it as there are aspects that I really enjoyed too.
Genre: Domestic Thriller
Pages: 441 pages
Publisher: Bookouture
Publication Date: August 17, 2023
Welcome to Serenity Falls,’ I say, forcing a smile as I guide our new guests across the courtyard and through the doors of the old house. This should be a fresh new start for the couple, but how can I help them when my own life is being torn apart?
My husband Victor and I have been together for twenty-five years and we’ve created a successful marriage retreat business. The tranquil hotel, with its cherry blossom trees and the sound of the waterfall in the backdrop, is the perfect setting for couples to repair their fractured relationships. My own marriage has been a shining example of honesty and trust. Or at least that’s what I believed…
When a police officer knocks on my door to tell me the man I loved has been killed in a tragic accident, I’m left trembling with shock. But that isn’t all. An unnamed woman was by his side when Victor died, and she now lies in a coma. As my husband’s secrets unravel, I discover that my whole life has been a lie.
Now my future is at stake and my life is in danger. And I have to make a choice to protect myself and my family.
A choice that will turn me into a liar, just like Victor.
And will end in murder…
Jesse Q. Susanto wrote Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice to Murderers which I loved. But I’m Not Done With You Yet sounds much different – in all the best ways. I’m looking forward to reading this next.
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pages: 345 pages
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: August 22, 2023
Some friends—and friendships—are worth killing for in this dark, twisty suspense novel by national bestselling author Jesse Q. Sutanto.
Jane is unhappy.
A struggling midlist writer whose novels barely command four figures, she feels trapped in an underwhelming marriage, just scraping by to pay a crippling Bay Area mortgage for a house—a life—she’s never really wanted.
There’s only ever been one person she cared about, one person who truly understood her: Thalia. Jane’s best and only friend nearly a decade ago during their Creative Writing days at Oxford. It was the only good year of Jane’s life—cobblestones and books and damp English air, heady wine and sweet cider and Thalia, endless Thalia. But then one night ruined everything. The blood-soaked night that should have bound Thalia to Jane forever but instead made her lose her completely. Thalia disappeared without a trace, and Jane has been unable to find her since.
Until now.
Because there she is, her name at the top of the New York Times bestseller list: A Most Pleasant Death by Thalia Ashcroft. When she discovers a post from Thalia on her website about attending a book convention in New York City in a week—“Can’t wait to see you there!”—Jane can’t wait either.
She’ll go to New York City, too, credit card bill be damned. And this time, she will do things right. Jane won’t lose Thalia again.
I figured out last week that, at some point, I had stopped updating my calendar with new ARCs. You may remember that my calendar is at the heart of my organizational system – so this was a big problem and is the reason I still have three books to read that came out on the 8th. No sooner than I finished updating my checklist and my calendar and was feeling majorly overwhelmed, Penguin Teen sent me pages and pages of widgets based on books I said I was interested in. That was the last thing I wanted to see! But I took a deep breath, and knowing that my calendar was now updated and that the widgets extend into next spring – I only accepted and downloaded those books I knew I could easily fit and left the others in a folder for “in case I have room.” I also decided to start implementing a new strategy with widgets, which is: Put them in folders by month, and as I have time, I will download and read them, and if I don’t have time, then oh, well.Let’s see if that goes better than my current strategy.
Me too! It hasn’t killed my love of reading but it has dimmed ARCs for me. I have a friend on IG who was blogging for awhile and she does that or used to. It worked well for her. So 🤞
I hear you about having an organization system being critical in managing ARCs. Years ago, I created a private group on Goodreads to manage it all and I’m still using it. If it went away…
That Sutanto book is one I’m anxious to get! Hope you love it and everything else in your haul, Tessa💜
I’m anxious to read it. I didn’t know that she wrote Vera Wang when I got it and now that I do I’m even more intrigued. And organization is a must when dealing with ARCs. Lesson learned! Must not let up on the system. 😁
That’s a good idea about the widgets by month. And I know what you mean about multiple books being released on the same day. I’m still about a month or more behind – which is why I’m reading one on my Kindle, listening to another, and reading a third on my phone, lol. My Roommate is a Vampire looks great – I thought about requesting it, but couldn’t fit it in. Wonder why?
I’m moving ahead and will try to pick up the three that are behind as I go. Or I will mark “not giving feedback” and own up to my organizational mess up. They probably would understand.
I’m not done with you yet, the title is amazing. I have just started The Survivors, Someone is a serial killer and from what I have read so far, It is good.
You know I normally go for the psych thrillers, but My Roomate is a Vampire, does sound like a lot of fun, and every now and then I like to mix things up. I’ll be curious to see your review on that one.
I just finished The Stranger in the Lifeboat by Mitch Albom. Simply amazing!

Great books, Tessa! Almost all of these are on my TBR.. and a couple more are about to be.😆
Thanks for sharing and Happy Reading!
They do look like excellent reads, don’t they? I can’t wait!
Lol. Too many do.. that’s why our TBRs are so long.

It is a good title. Fingers-crossed the story lives up to it!
