What am I reading next?
I either started Enola Holmes and the Mark of the Mongoose last night or I am this morning. I’ve loved the other books I’ve read in this series, so I will be surprised if I don’t love this one too! She’s such a great female detective!
Genre: YA Mystery
Pages: 298 pgs
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Publication Date: September 5, 2023
In May of 1890, Enola Holmes is finally fully on her own and, no longer hiding from her older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, attending classes and occasionally pursuing her chosen profession as a scientific perditorian, a finder of lost things and people.
Wolcott Balestier, the representative of an American book publisher, arrived in London on a singular mission – to contract with English authors for their latest works. When Balestier disappears on the streets of London one day, his great friend – Rudyard Kipling – bursts into Enola’s office looking for help in finding him. Brash and unwilling to hire a young woman, instead he turns to Sherlock Holmes. Convinced that evil has befallen Balestier, at the hands of rival American publishers who pirate the works of English authors, he sets the elder Holmes on the trail.
But Enola is not one to accept defeat, especially not to her brother, and sets off on her own – determined to learn the truth behind the disappearance of the young American. Can book publishing truly be so ruthless and deadly or can the missing man be rescued from his apparent fate and returned to his friends and loved ones?
The redoubtable Enola is determined to do just that, even if it means working with her brother Sherlock!
Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper started out so strong but failed in the second half. It’s such a great premise, I’m kind of annoyed someone didn’t work with her to develop it out.
Genre:Romantic Comedy
Pages: 303 pages
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Publication Date: September 5, 2023
Juggling newfound witchy powers, a house full of ghosts, and verbal battles with the handsome local librarian is almost too much for a new witch to manage. But falling in love with said librarian wasn’t on her to-do list…
From the moment Riley Everett set foot in Starfall Point, magic bubbled inside of her. But with only her late aunt’s journals and a cantankerous live-in ghost butler to instruct her on all things witchy—including her newly inherited Victorian haunted house—Riley seeks out a coven for sisterhood and support. The last person she expects to be drawn to is the town’s frustrating, yet ridiculously attractive head librarian.
Edison Held knows almost everything there is to know about Starfall Point, but Shaddow House was always off-limits, thanks to its elusive owner. If he can convince the new owner, Riley, to let him take a peek inside, there’s so much he could learn. But as he gets closer to Riley, he’s fascinated by her dazzling wit and fiery spirit. Edison will do whatever he can to help Riley keep her family legacy alive, especially if it means spending more time with the captivating new witch in town.
Bestselling author Molly Harper wields a magical pen in this hilarious, delightful witchy romcom perfect for fans of Erin Sterling and Lana Harper.
I’ve heard great things about The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa Matlin. It’s a debut thriller and I look forward to the jaw-dropping twists and turns!
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pages: 278 pages
Publisher: Bantam
Publication Date: September 12, 2023
A therapist and self-help writer with all the answers, Sarah Slade has just bought a gorgeous Victorian in the community of her dreams. Turns out, you can get a killer deal on a house where someone was murdered. Plus, renovating Black Wood House makes for great blog content and a decent distraction from her failing marriage. Good thing nobody knows that her past is just as filthy as the bloodstain on her bedroom floor.
But the renovations are fast becoming a nightmare. Sarah imagined custom avocado wallpaper, massive profits, and an appreciative husband who wants to share her bed again. Instead, the neighbors hate her guts and her husband still sleeps on the couch. And though the builders attempt to cover up Black Wood’s horrifying past, a series of bizarre accidents, threatening notes, and unexplained footsteps in the attic only confirms for Sarah what the rest of the town already knew: Something is very wrong in that house.
With every passing moment, Sarah’s life spirals further out of control—and with it, her sense of reality. But as she peels back the curling wallpaper and discovers the house’s secrets, she realizes that the deadly legacy of Black Wood House has only just begun.
Look at that! Only one book in the last week! I’ve got a bunch of physical books making their way to me that I’m very curious about but I’ll tell you about them next week.
I also got the Hepworth book. I really wanted to read the newest Enola Holmes book, but had to pass. Still working on cutting down my NG shelf. Happy Reading, Tessa!

Witches Get Stuff Done sounds intersting. I’m reading The Bear and The Nightingale and will start Midnight at Houdini today.
I started Enola Holmes, but then got distracted by another book, which happens A LOT!
Hi Tessa, sorry to hear Witches Get Stuff Done was disappointing, but I hope the new Enola Holmes book will make up for it – I really need to try this series! 😅 Here’s my WWW post: https://thebookwormchronicles.wordpress.com/2023/08/30/%f0%9f%93%9a-what-i-have-been-reading-august-2023-wwwwednesday/
