Two New Witchy Romcoms! #bookreviews

Things you should know about Poppy: 1. She’s a witch 2. She has magical hair like Rapunzel from Tangled 3. She lives with Iris, the head of her coven, in a beautiful, ramshackle house next to Highgate cemetery 4. She works at Hubble Bubble, a magic shop in Covent Garden. Though none of it is real magic as that would be highly irresponsible. Until… …Poppy accidentally sells gorgeous celebrity magician Axl Storm, all six-foot-four of him, a cursed pendant. When all hell breaks loose can the guy with fake magic and the girl with real magic fix the chaos they’ve caused? Or will sparks fly both in and out of the cauldron?

🌻Hex and the City by Kate Johnson🌻

One-word review: Shocking

My thoughts:

Hex and the City by Kate Johnson is a laugh-out-loud magical romantic comedy that shocked me with a few fascinating twists.

I loved the magical system, which has a unique aspect with Chaos magic. Poppy, the main character, learned that she was a witch when she turned 18, and ever since, she’s been learning how to develop and control her magic with the help of Iris, an experienced witch. Her talent is in chaos magic, which makes sense since chaos surrounded her all her life, including her hair, which truly has a life of its own. I am fascinated with chaos magic and all that it can do.

The relationship between Poppy and Alex, a famous magician, is steaming hot almost from their first meeting. Their relationship goes through all sorts of twists and turns – none of which I saw coming, and I enjoyed all the surprises along the way. Those twists created a fresh and original story while maintaining the traditional elements of a romantic comedy.

Written from Poppie’s perspective, the pace stays fast from start to finish, helped by several thriller-style elements introduced with the many twists and turns. And there are some doozy twists, which I already mentioned. Can you tell they were my favorite part of the story?

Hex and the City is a magical choice of reads – perfect for the upcoming fall season.

Juggling newfound witchy powers, a house full of ghosts, and verbal battles with the handsome local librarian is almost too much for a new witch to manage. But falling in love with said librarian wasn’t on her to-do list… From the moment Riley Everett set foot in Starfall Point, magic bubbled inside of her. But with only her late aunt’s journals and a cantankerous live-in ghost butler to instruct her on all things witchy—including her newly inherited Victorian haunted house—Riley seeks out a coven for sisterhood and support. The last person she expects to be drawn to is the town’s frustrating, yet ridiculously attractive head librarian. Edison Held knows almost everything there is to know about Starfall Point, but Shaddow House was always off-limits, thanks to its elusive owner. If he can convince the new owner, Riley, to let him take a peek inside, there’s so much he could learn. But as he gets closer to Riley, he’s fascinated by her dazzling wit and fiery spirit. Edison will do whatever he can to help Riley keep her family legacy alive, especially if it means spending more time with the captivating new witch in town. Bestselling author Molly Harper wields a magical pen in this hilarious, delightful witchy romcom perfect for fans of Erin Sterling and Lana Harper.

🌻Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper🌻

One-word review: Underdeveloped

Emojis: 🧙🏻‍♀️🏠☠️

Rating: 3🌟s

My thoughts:

Witches Get Stuff Done started out great. I loved the premise and the mystery of the house. I also loved the setting – an island in the middle of one of the Great Lakes bordering Michigan called Starfall Point. The story’s first half, which focuses on the mystery and the newly discovered witchy powers of the main character, Riley, reads very quickly and ultimately holds me immersed in this world. But then things changed.

The second half fell victim to plot holes and a romance that felt very inauthentic to me. I’m not sure why the storytelling changed to make the second half disappointing, but I know that I struggled to find the magic that the story began with. I would have loved for the relationship between Riley and Edison to progress slowly, even if that meant it didn’t become a romantic relationship until the book’s end. Since a mystery and a twist already existed in the story, it just didn’t need the tension of a breakup to fuel it.

I would have also loved to see those plot gaps filled in – which would mean more development of the mystery of the house and the magic development.  This is the first book in a series, and I liked the first half of this book enough to possibly read book 2 with a dose of healthy skepticism.

Well, at least one worked out really well! I enjoy those paranormal stories where the main character discovers her powers as she reaches adulthood. The possible story terrain is endless. Excellent reviews, Tessa💜

It is – I agree. It gives me hope that I’ll still come into my powers. 😂 Just kidding! Some people would argue that I have powers but they aren’t the witchy kind. 😂

I don’t read a lot of witchy stories, but these sound interesting. I’m glad one was a great read for you, Tessa.
