🌻Hex and the City by Kate Johnson🌻
One-word review: Shocking

Rating: 4🌟s
My thoughts:
Hex and the City by Kate Johnson is a laugh-out-loud magical romantic comedy that shocked me with a few fascinating twists.
I loved the magical system, which has a unique aspect with Chaos magic. Poppy, the main character, learned that she was a witch when she turned 18, and ever since, she’s been learning how to develop and control her magic with the help of Iris, an experienced witch. Her talent is in chaos magic, which makes sense since chaos surrounded her all her life, including her hair, which truly has a life of its own. I am fascinated with chaos magic and all that it can do.
The relationship between Poppy and Alex, a famous magician, is steaming hot almost from their first meeting. Their relationship goes through all sorts of twists and turns – none of which I saw coming, and I enjoyed all the surprises along the way. Those twists created a fresh and original story while maintaining the traditional elements of a romantic comedy.
Written from Poppie’s perspective, the pace stays fast from start to finish, helped by several thriller-style elements introduced with the many twists and turns. And there are some doozy twists, which I already mentioned. Can you tell they were my favorite part of the story?
Hex and the City is a magical choice of reads – perfect for the upcoming fall season.

🌻Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper🌻
One-word review: Underdeveloped
Emojis: 🧙🏻♀️🏠☠️
Rating: 3🌟s
My thoughts:
Witches Get Stuff Done started out great. I loved the premise and the mystery of the house. I also loved the setting – an island in the middle of one of the Great Lakes bordering Michigan called Starfall Point. The story’s first half, which focuses on the mystery and the newly discovered witchy powers of the main character, Riley, reads very quickly and ultimately holds me immersed in this world. But then things changed.
The second half fell victim to plot holes and a romance that felt very inauthentic to me. I’m not sure why the storytelling changed to make the second half disappointing, but I know that I struggled to find the magic that the story began with. I would have loved for the relationship between Riley and Edison to progress slowly, even if that meant it didn’t become a romantic relationship until the book’s end. Since a mystery and a twist already existed in the story, it just didn’t need the tension of a breakup to fuel it.
I would have also loved to see those plot gaps filled in – which would mean more development of the mystery of the house and the magic development. This is the first book in a series, and I liked the first half of this book enough to possibly read book 2 with a dose of healthy skepticism.

Two very different books. Hex and the City sounds like such a blast, and I love the cover. Great reviews, Tessa!
It was a blast! I had so much fun reading it 💕
Well, at least one worked out really well! I enjoy those paranormal stories where the main character discovers her powers as she reaches adulthood. The possible story terrain is endless. Excellent reviews, Tessa💜
It is – I agree. It gives me hope that I’ll still come into my powers. 😂 Just kidding! Some people would argue that I have powers but they aren’t the witchy kind. 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great reviews, very witchy and spooky.
Perfect for October reads!
That title and covers looks promising, too bad it turned out disappointing. Great review!
I don’t read a lot of witchy stories, but these sound interesting. I’m glad one was a great read for you, Tessa.
