Let’s Discuss How Long It Takes to Read a Book plus my weekly updates

How long does it usually take you to finish a book?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

My Answer:

On days I don’t work, I can read a whole book that’s in the 300-400 page range in one day. On days I do work, I get maybe half of that amount read. But all this is if I’m pushing it and reading very fast. If I read at my comfortable pace, it takes me two or three days to read a book unless I’m reading one of those that I can’t put down.

I’ve been watching Outer Banks – all seasons – on Netflix and Wheel of Time – season 2 on Prime. Outer Banks is so addictive and so mockable – it’s been fun to watch.

It’s been so relaxing not having any houseguests this week. Hubby and I have been enjoying some quality time since daughter #2 is either working or sleeping. She’s been in police dispatch training, which means when 911 calls come in she communicates with police officers and gets them to the places they need to go and is in communication with them throughout. I think that sounds so interesting and stressful (like when she had to handle a bomb threat) but in a way that feels like you are actively doing something to help.

I received so many physical books over the last week and a half – it’s kind of crazy. And just when I thought it was stopping, a publisher changed from using USPS to using UPS, so I received a few more that way. I think it’ll be paused for a while after the book I receive today. That poor cart I showed last week is pretty much full now.

Glad you had a quieter week 😊 When I have time I can read a book in a day, but at the moment in the evenings it is taking me 4-5 days. Hope you have a lovely weekend 💕

I get that. I get very little reading done in the evening.

If a book really hooks me and I’ve got nothing important to do I can also finish a book in a day. It’s a great feeling when that happens!

      Definitely!

If it’s a genre fiction book (mystery, romance, etc.) I read at between 80 and 100 pages an hour so I can read a book in an evening. If I have a free day I can read a couple. Classics, literary fiction and non-fiction take longer to read. It is very satisfying to read a book all in one go

      That it is 😊

If the book is 300 pages, I can read it in 2 days. if it’s slow max 3 days but in general, I can read around 70-100 pages a day.

that’s good especially since you have a young daughter.

I’m a pretty slow reader when it’s an eBook because I get easily distracted these days. I used to be able to finish them in two days but it takes much longer now. My audiobooks are a different story! I can finish them generally in two days but more like three when they’re over ten hours long. I listen at 1.25 so it’s a shorter listen.

Congrats on getting some down time. I now understand how you can consume so many books each week! Still, I don’t know how you’re keeping up? Do you ever say no to book shipments?

Different publishers handle the books differently. I’m in a lot of the big publishers data bases and it seems like all the imprints have access to it. So sometimes I just get books and sometimes they send newsletters where you can let them know which ones you would be possibly interested in receiving and they choose from that what to send. Infrequently though, they ask me if I want them to send me a specific book – so those I have control over. I’m under no official obligation when they send me a book. If it’s an ARC, I try to get it read or if I can’t fit it in, I just do a post on IG like Coffee and Currently Reading or just a feature/spotlight post during the publication week. Berkley typically only sends 2-3 books per month but this last month they have sent me many more than that. I think someone in their PR department has gone rogue. 😂

Sometimes it only takes me 2-3 days and that’s usually during the week. On the weekend I can get in a lot more reading time. I’d love to be able to get through one in a day – sure would help the NG shelf!

It’s been helping mine – that’s for sure, but it’s hard to sustain if anything’s going on in my world.

On my Kindle, about 8-10 days, depending on the length. With print books, it takes me longer since I read about 20 pages before going to sleep at night.

Do you remember what you read for a long time after you read it? It seems like that pace would lead to a good memory of the details in the book.

      1. Davida Chazan Avatar

Oh, yes… quite a long time, actually. See, have mild dyslexia so I read slower than most people. I actually hear the words in my head while I read (with accents and inflections and everything – even see pictures). So yes, that tends to help me retain a whole lot more. But it also means that if I forget things about a book, then it probably wasn’t that good. It also makes me hyper aware of anachronisms and mistakes, which, for a lover of historical fiction, can be a problem for some writers who are sloppy with their research!

It sounds like a much quieter week for you. And I agree, dispatch training sounds so stressful!
    Have a great weekend!

It was much quieter for sure and that was much needed.

I definitely can read a book in a day if I’m not distracted and its engaging. 😂

    1. Tessa Pulyer Avatar

      Distractions get me too.

It depends, I can finish a book in a day, but when I am working, I struggle to finish my book because I only read at night.

    1. Tessa Pulyer Avatar

If I could only read at night, I wouldn’t get very far very fast.

      1. writerravenclaw Avatar

        Neither do I lol.

  11. bluereadergal Avatar

Depends on the book and what is going on in my life.

At the moment, it takes me about a week to read a book, as I have become very busy. I’m gravitating towards short stories and novella ebooks as they are quicker to read.

    1. Tessa Pulyer Avatar

      That’s a good idea!

  13. Hooked By That Book Avatar

Reading time is about the same for me, usually 2 to 3 days. I have finished books in one day before, especially if they’re really riveting. And sometimes it takes me a bit longer, if I’m not that into the book.
