What am I currently reading?
What did I just finish?
What am I reading next?
Nalini Singh has been on my watch list for a while, and I’m so excited to start reading There Should Have Been Eight today. It sounds like a book I will completely enjoy!
Genre: Paranormal Suspense
Pages: 416 pages
Publisher: Berkley Publishers
Publication Date: November 21, 2023
In this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh, a remote estate in New Zealand’s Southern Alps hosts a reunion no one will ever forget.
Seven friends.
One last weekend.
A mansion half in ruins.
No room for lies.
Someone is going to confess.
Because there should have been eight. . . .
They met when they were teenagers. Now they’re adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to others—none more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago.
They’ve gathered to reminisce at Bea’s family’s estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and they’re snowed in at the edge of eternity, there’s nowhere left to hide from their shared history.
As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage. Underneath it all, there’s the nagging feeling that Bea’s shocking death wasn’t what it was claimed to be. And before the weekend is through, the truth will be unleashed—no matter the cost. . . .
Reading Inheritance by Nora Roberts, I felt like Roberts has gotten back to the special something I had always loved in her fantasy stories. This new trilogy started off with a bang.
Genre: Romantasy (I know how much you all love this made-up word, which is basically a “ship” between romance and fantasy, which is funny)
Pages: 448 pages
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Publication Date: November 21, 2023
Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—a tale of tragedies, loves found and lost, and a family haunted for generations.
1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…
Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in it for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.
Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.” It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…
I’ve loved the other two books in this Terry Brooks fantasy series so I’m more than excited to read Sister of Starlit Sea next!
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 364 pages
Publisher: Del Rey
Publication Date: November 14, 2023
A rebellious young heroine begins a voyage of self-discovery in the third novel of an epic fantasy series set in the world of Viridian Deep, from the legendary author of the Shannara saga.
Auris’s adoptive sister Char has always been the baby of the family—a position that grates on Char, especially when everyone insists on telling her exactly what to do and how to do it. But Char is certain that her headstrong, impulsive behavior, the quality her family sees as her greatest weakness, is actually her greatest strength: the willingness to instantly brave danger and leap to the rescue when anyone she loves is threatened.
Char knows she will never grow into the woman she was meant to be under her family’s loving but repressive eye, so a month before she turns fifteen, she runs away and joins a Human pirate crew in the warm southerly regions of her world. Then, three years into her pirate career, her captain—the man she is convinced she loves—is captured by the leaders of the slave trade he has been fighting. When Char leaps in to rescue him, she finds herself thrust into an adventure that will uncover secrets she never suspected about herself, one that will maybe, finally, teach her to look before she leaps.
I’ve got another interesting collection of books this week. I also have a few physical books that I didn’t include.
I loved it. It made sleeping at night a little difficult, especially with all the mirrors that are on my side of the room (😂) but it’s completely compelling.
I haven’t read Nora in YEARS! I have been seeing this cover pop around and I’m so interested in it. I think this might have me give it a go! Have a wonderful week!
This is an excellent one. She had gotten away from the aspects that makes her writing so incredible but she’s returned to them with this new series. Not to mention the paranormal suspense is through the roof!
I need to read more Terry Brooks, Tessa. Sister of the Starlit Sea sounds wonderful, and the cover is drop-dead gorgeous. I’m a big fan of beautiful covers. I can’t wait to read your review. Happy Reading, my friend.
I didn’t care for “The Sword of Shannara” for some reason. Maybe I was comparing it too much to the LotR. But that was like 40 years ago! Time to give him a break. Lol. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂
I’m not into thrillers, but I LOVE Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling/Psy-Changeling Trinity series, and I’m getting to like her Guildhunter series. (It’s slower going due to the graphic violence and sex in the early books. Good thing I started at the end, initially. Or at least what was the end at that time!). Even though I’m not typically into romance, her Psy-Changeling has been my favourite series for the last… 7 years and counting.
I’m told that her recent foray into thrillers has the same high quality writing as her other series (and even is winning awards), which doesn’t surprise me!
This is her second foray into thrillers, a genre she just started writing. I know she’s pretty thrilled with the reception of them since it’s a new genre for her. I can’t say I’m surprised they’ve been so successful though, given the general quality of her writing. Even without having read them. 😂. (I get her newsletter, initially for the free short stories and scenes from her Psy-Changeling series, but now I’m really appreciating all of it.)
🤦♀️. I messed up above. There Should’ve Been Eight is actually her *third* thriller, not her second! My bad. (A Madness of Sunshine, and Quiet in Her Bones, being the other two).

The Ministry of time has a really eye-catching cover, hope it’s good!
I do too! There’s something very retro 70s about that cover, isn’t there?
I loved Inheritance. I hope you enjoy it too.

Glad you loved Inheritance, too! The Faculty Lounge looks really interesting. Nice haul, Tessa💜
I thought so too. I figured I could empathize easily with the characters 😂
I’m starting Inheritance today. And looking forward to Nalini Singh’s book. Have a great week!
Your book haul for this week looks really interesting. I love that cover for The Haunting of Hecate
I think Romantasy is becoming a thing. I heard it tossed around quite a bit at the book festival last weekend. Happy Reading, Tessa!
It definitely is!
I haven’t read anything in a while.

I just love anything he writes. His world building is wonderful and his characters are just wow!

[…] to Tessa @ Tessa Talks Books for featuring this in her WWW Wednesday post as one of her book […]
I’m looking forward to Inheritance, but will make sure I don’t read it before I go to bed. Enjoy all your new additions, Tessa.
