Just Life

The countdown has begun for our much-needed time away. I’m trying to get the fine details in order, like emailing the Celebrity Cruises special needs department about my gluten-free-ness, switching to a phone plan that includes international service, and figuring out which of my credit cards doesn’t charge fees for international purchases – you know all those things that are so easy to forget until it’s too late. The cruise couldn’t have come at a better time because work has been very stressful for my husband lately.

This week is my birthday week though, which is usually a great week!

So, that was my week – how was yours?

Dad Camp by Evan S. Porter is a heartwarming novel about a loving dad who drags his eleven-year-old daughter to “father-daughter week” at a remote summer camp—their last chance to bond before he loses her to teenage girlhood entirely.

After his daughter, Avery, was born, John gave it all up—hobbies, friends, a dream job—to be something more: a super dad. Since then, he’s spent nearly every waking second with Avery, who’s his absolute best bud. Or, at least, she was.

When now eleven-year-old Avery begins transforming into an eye-rolling zombie of a preteen who dreads spending time with him, a desperate John whisks her away for a weeklong father-daughter retreat to get their relationship back on track before she starts middle school.

But John’s attempts to bond only seem to drive his daughter further away, and his instincts tell him Avery’s hiding something more than just preteen angst. Even worse, the camp is far from the idyllic getaway he had in mind. John finds himself navigating a group of toxic dads who can’t seem to get along, cringe-worthy forced bonding activities, and a camp director who has it out for him. With camp and summer break slipping away fast, John’s determined to conquer it all for a chance to become Avery’s hero again.

This brilliant and deeply funny father-daughter story is perfect for fans of poignant and hilarious books like The Guncle by Steven Rowley, Steve Martin’s family classic Cheaper by the Dozen, and Judd Apatow’s bighearted comedies.

Being gluten free is so hard when going on holiday but I’ve heard cruises are really good so hope it all goes well x

They are because you have the same staff serving you all week, so they can work with you to preplan.

I’m preparing to go to Germany in April so I know what you mean. I have to settle on an international phone/text plan and I’m watching those clothes folding reels on Insta so I can get more clothes into one suitcase. I’m actually getting better at folding!

I missed it! Where are you going on a cruise?? I hope you have the best time and yay for birthday week!! I’m trying to get our passports done because the in-laws want to take us to the Bahamas this July. It’s their 40th anniversary and if they want to take us on vaca, sure! haha! There’s a lot though, so I hear you! Especially, with Finn’s food allergies.. maybe I should call the resort and see what options he has. I hope you have a wonderful week!!

Life with a food issue (allergy or autoimmune) is very challenging especially when it comes to vacations. For instance I found that cruises are easier than normal trips (outside of the US) because you have the same staff handling your food and they can prepare for your specific needs. Every night they will go over the next night’s menu with me and I will decide then I’m eating. I would definitely call the resort and/or Google the resort and food allergies. You can usually find a lot of info online from other people with food allergies. In the US (for me) it doesn’t matter as much because I have a better feel for finding gluten free food plus there’s no issue with language.

We are going to the Caribbean. I chose this cruise because it stops in the Virgin Islands. (And three other places)

Yes, I am very concerned about going to the Bahamas this summer. I believe that I can pack baby food on my carry-on, since it’s a medical issue now. So, I’ll have to look into all that because I’m not even sure what foods will be safe there, since I don’t know how they cook/prepare items. I will call the resort too! That’s a great idea.

We went on a Caribbean one before we got pregnant with Ollie. We stopped in St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten. It was amazing!!

Happy birthday, Tessa! 😀 I’m excited that your cruise is getting closer! Countdowns make it so much fun when you’re anticipating something. Good luck with getting everything sorted out.

I hope you had a wonderful birthday week, Tessa. I was on the Celebrity Silhouette for my ten day cruise at the beginning of February. It was amazing. Celebrity did a wonderful job with food, entertainment and just everything. I hope you love it! I binge watched Season 1 of The Way Home and now am watching season 2 each week. I am enjoying it. Have a great weekend.
