Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is bookish quotes. I chose ten quotes about reading that I just love.
- “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons
- “A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.” – Madeleine L’Engle
- “We don’t need a list of rights and wrongs, tables of dos and don’ts: We need books, time, and silence. Thou shalt not is soon forgotten, but Once upon a time lasts forever.” – Philip Pullman
- “Reading is important. If you know how to read, then the whole world opens up to you.” – Barack Obama
- “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
- “Some books leave us free and some books make us free.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
- “Read a lot. Expect something big, something exalting or deepening from a book. No book is worth reading that isn’t worth re-reading.” – Susan Sontag
- “When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.” – Maya Angelou
- “Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it’s a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real.” – Nora Ephron
- “That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

C.S. Lewis had a wonderful quote about the importance of reading:
“Those of us who have been true readers all our life seldom fully realize the enormous extension of our being which we owe to authors. We realize it best when we talk with an unliterary friend. He may be full of goodness and good sense but he inhabits a tiny world. In it, we should be suffocated. The man who is contented to be only himself, and therefore less a self, is in prison. My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others.”
Thanks for sharing yours! F. Scott Fitzgerald & James Baldwin (quoted at Artsy Reader Girl) appear to have had the same thought. I went with recent Kindle highlights.
I love that!
I love these quotes and the George Martin one is one of my own favourites.
It’s so beautifully said ❤️
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me” – C.S. Lewis
