Top Ten Tuesday:  Top Ten Things I LOVE About Dungeon Crawler Carl (and why you need to read it)

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is Ten Things I Loved About Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman – I mentioned this series and its first book last week, have since finished it, and am completely addicted and here’s why:

10) The quirky, nerdiness of the whole series.

9) The moral grayness of every character. No one is purely good, instead each character is a varying shade of gray.

8) Carl – he is not the person you’d expect to have a cat side-kick but I love his creative problem solving and his quick thinking.

7) The whole playing a game for survival is very Hunger Games or Divergent-esque.

6) The alien talk show circuit is quite an interesting aspect.

5) The actioned packed nature of the story with loads of twists, turns, and thrills. There is never a dull moment.

4) All the snark and lol humor – I’m there for it!

3) The RPG-ness of it all. I don’t know what I think of Berkley coining a new genre they are calling RPGLit but I do love the RPGness of the story. It’s relatable and brings more humor.

2) The catch phrase – “Goddamnit, Donut.” When I first received merch with the catchphrase (before I read the book), I wondered why they were sending me merch with profanity, but after I read the book – I wanted it on everything. It becomes so funny!

1) DONUT – Princess Donut to be exact – Princess Donut is a show cat (Persian) and is full of sass and spunk as you would expect from a cat. In this story, she is a full-fledged talking character rather than just a pet which is awesome!

The apocalypse will be televised!

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

What’s a book you’d want to do a top ten for?

I can’t imagine you wouldn’t love this as much as I do. It’s just everything I could ask for in a story. Originally it was indie published I think (I looked up the pub and I couldn’t find anything about them) but Berkley has picked it up, redesigned the covers, done some editing (I would imagine) and they are putting it out starting next month – #2 in Sept and #3 in Oct
