This week’s Top Ten Tuesday just didn’t happen, so I thought I’d do a WWW Wednesday post instead. I’m listening to Disturbing the Dead by Kelley Armstrong and reading the 4th book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series because I just can’t get enough if it.
Genre: Thriller
Pages: 340
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Publication Date: May 7, 2024
Disturbing the Dead is the latest in a unique series with one foot in the 1860s and the other in the present day. The Rip Through Time crime novels are a genre-blending, atmospheric romp from New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong.
Victorian Scotland is becoming less strange to modern-day homicide detective Mallory Atkinson. Though inhabiting someone else’s body will always be unsettling, even if her employers know that she’s not actually housemaid Catriona Mitchell, ever since the night both of them were attacked in the same dark alley 150 years apart. Mallory likes her job as assistant to undertaker/medical examiner Dr. Duncan Gray, and is developing true friends—and feelings—in this century.
So, understanding the Victorian fascination with death, Mallory isn’t that surprised when she and her friends are invited to a mummy unwrapping at the home of Sir Alastair Christie. When their host is missing when it comes time to unwrap the mummy, Gray and Mallory are asked to step in. And upon closer inspection, it’s not a mummy they’ve unwrapped, but a much more modern body.
Genre: Thriller
Pages: 586
Publisher: Dandy House (originally)/Berkley (republishing)
Publication Date: originally July 1, 2021 (Berkley will be republishing later this year, I think)
New Achievement! Total, Utter Failure.
You failed a quest less than five minutes after you received it. Now that’s talent.
A floating fortress occupied by warrior gnomes. A castle made of sand. A derelict submarine guarded by malfunctioning machines. A haunted crypt surrounded by lethal traps.
It was supposed to be easy. One bubble. Four castles. Fifteen days. Capture each one, and the stairwell is unlocked.
Here’s the thing. It’s never easy. Carl and his team can’t go it alone. Not this time. They must rely on the help of the low-level, I-can’t-believe-these-idiots-are-still-alive crawlers trapped in the bubble with them. But can they be trusted?
Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the fifth floor of the dungeon.
Just Finished
I finished Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia this weekend. I love the main character but I wish it felt more like the time its set in.
Genre: Historical Mystery
Pages: 330
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: June 1, 2021
Harlem, 1926. Young Black women like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.
Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Harlem’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends, especially her girlfriend, Rosa Maria Moreno, might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.
When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she’s been trying to ignore—two other local Black girls have been murdered in the past few weeks. After an altercation with a police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or wind up in a jail cell. Louise has no choice but to investigate and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind hell-bent on taking more lives, maybe even her own….

I’m a little worried about Magical Meet Cute. The reviews are just so mixed – to the opposite extremes. But the premise sounds interesting to me. I’ve never seen a golem in a romcom.
Genre: Paranormal Rom Com
Pages: 397
Publisher: MIRA
Publication Date: Aug 27, 2024
Is he the real deal…or did she truly summon a golem?
Faye Kaplan used to be engaged. She also used to have a successful legal practice. But she much prefers her new life as a potter in Woodstock, New York. The only thing missing is the perfect guy.
Not that she needs one. She’s definitely happy alone.
That is, until she finds her town papered with anti-Semitic flyers after yet another failed singles event at the synagogue. Desperate for comfort, Faye drunkenly turns to the only thing guaranteed to soothe her—pottery. A golem protector is just what her town needs…and adding all the little details to make him her ideal man can’t hurt, right?
When a seriously hot stranger mysteriously turns up the next day, Greg seems too good to be true—if you ignore the fact that Faye hit him with her bike. And that he subsequently lost his memory…
But otherwise, the man checks Every. Single. Box. Causing Faye to wonder if Greg’s sudden and spicy appearance might be anything but a coincidence.
Looks like you have a lot of reading this week, Tessa, with some fat books. 🙂 “Disturbing the Dead” sounds good with the dual timeline. I hope you’re having a great week of reads.
This was the opening: “It was hard and magnificent. Faiga Kaplan, otherwise known as Faye to her friends, ran her hands down the long shaft of her latest clay creation. An earthenware vase…” now tell me I’m not worried 🤣
Hi Tessa, I recently finished reading the historical-mystery Garment of Shadows by Laurie R. King and now I am enjoying a comforting re-read of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in my beautiful illustrated edition. 😊 Blessings, Jessica 💌

The idea of a golem in a rom com is certainly intriguing. I hope that you enjoy all of your reads this week.
I think so too!
Dead girl has been on tbr for long time now. I hope you enjoy it.
I am enjoying it. It’s a pretty easy listen and that’s saying a lot coming from me.
It’s a bit nerve-racking when there’s mixed reviews for an upcoming read. I hope you enjoy it!
Especially when they are mostly opposite extremes 🫣
I have Magical Meet Cute on my tbr so I will be curious what you think of it!
So, you haven’t read it yet?
Magical Meet Cute looks adorable and I hope you enjoy it!!
I think so too! 🤞

Right? I noticed that too.
As long as they good ones, it doesn’t matter. 🙂
Sounds like they are a good read.
So far, so good 🩷

Have a great week Tessa!
You too!
You’ve mentioned that Armstrong series before, and I downloaded the first book but haven’t gotten to it yet. Time travels gets me every time.
The first one is very good and so is this one so far!
Im worried about Magical Meet Cute, too, so I’ll be interested in your review. Enjoy everything, Tessa💜
