Book Review: Build a Girlfriend by Elba Luz
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars)
Looking for a rom-com that’s equal parts heart, humor, and chaos? Build a Girlfriend by Elba Luz delivers all that and more! From its quirky protagonist to its heartwarming family dynamics, this story is an absolute treat. Let’s dive in!
The Plot

The story follows Amelia, a self-proclaimed disaster when it comes to relationships (and let’s be real, life in general). After a particularly humiliating breakup, she decides to take a break from romance and focus on herself. But when she agrees to help her tech-savvy niece test a cutting-edge AI matchmaking app, things get hilariously complicated. Enter Leon, a broody yet charming MMC who seems tailor-made for her… if only their communication wasn’t so hopelessly off.
As Amelia navigates her clumsiness (literal and emotional), the meddling of her lovable family, and her growing feelings for Leon, the result is a sweet, laugh-out-loud story about finding yourself—and maybe love—when you least expect it.
Amelia: The Quirky, Clumsy Star
Amelia is the kind of protagonist you can’t help but root for. Her quirky clumsiness is endearing, but what makes her truly shine is the way she grows throughout the story. Elba Luz gives her depth, tying her physical clumsiness to emotional struggles and insecurities. Watching her find confidence, confront her fears, and ultimately embrace her messy, wonderful self was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Family First: A Warm, Close-Knit Dynamic
One of the standout elements of this book is Amelia’s family. Predominantly female and hilariously meddlesome, they are the heart of the story. Their love for each other shines in every interaction, from supportive pep talks to laugh-out-loud moments of chaos. The family dynamic feels vibrant and real, adding a layer of warmth and depth that elevates the story beyond a typical rom-com.
Leon: The Perfect MMC… Almost
Leon, the male main character, is the kind of love interest that makes you swoon. He’s charming, kind, and just the right amount of broody to keep things interesting. His chemistry with Amelia is undeniable, with moments that made me grin like a fool. But here’s the catch—the miscommunication trope. While it adds tension, their lack of honest communication dragged on longer than I’d have liked. Thankfully, the emotional payoff in the end made the frustration worth it.
Rom-Com Vibes: Humor, Chaos, and Heart
This book delivers classic rom-com vibes in the best way. From laugh-out-loud situations (Amelia’s antics are chef’s kiss) to swoony romantic moments, it keeps you flipping the pages. And while it leans heavily on humor, the story doesn’t shy away from heartfelt moments that tug at your emotions.
Final Thoughts
While the lingering miscommunication kept this from being a perfect five stars, Build a Girlfriend is still a standout read. With its endearing protagonist, lovable family, and swoony romance, it’s a book that sticks with you.
If you’re a fan of The Hating Game or The Unhoneymooners, you’ll adore this one. Add it to your TBR—you won’t regret it!

I saw this novel mentioned somewhere else today. I always enjoy a good meddlesome family, lol. Sounds like a good one, Tessa!
This sounds delightful, Tessa💜 I like quite a few romcom tropes but miscommunication stuff just annoys me unless it’s resolved quickly. Great review!
