Crash Landing by Annie McQuaid: A Slow-Burn Romance with Heart, Growth, and Missed Opportunities

Book Review: Crash Landing by Annie McQuaid

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5 stars)

Strong Chemistry & Character Growth

What truly shines in Crash Landing is the character work. I loved the connection between Piper and Wyatt—their chemistry was effortless, and I found myself rooting for them from their very first scene together. They have so much potential as a couple, and their moments together felt genuine and emotionally grounded.

But this story isn’t just about romance. Piper’s journey toward independence really stood out. Watching her find her voice, push back against her mother’s control, and choose a career path that she wanted was incredibly satisfying. Her personal growth was one of the most rewarding parts of the book and gave the story emotional depth.

What Worked for Me

Piper’s transformation: She goes from uncertain and people-pleasing to someone who stands her ground and pursues her passions.

Wyatt as a love interest: Supportive, swoony, and just the right amount of brooding.

Slow-burn romance: The tension builds steadily, with just enough longing to keep things interesting.

Where It Fell Short

While there’s a lot to appreciate in Crash Landing, the dual timeline format was a bit of a stumbling block for me. Rather than deepening the story, it felt like it pulled focus away from the emotional core. I think the story could’ve been even stronger if elements of the past had been revealed naturally through the present-day narrative.

There were also several important themes introduced—grief, identity, emotional boundaries—but they weren’t explored as fully as I’d hoped. I found myself wishing the book had gone deeper into these layers rather than skimming the surface.

Final Thoughts

Crash Landing has a strong foundation: a well-matched couple, emotional stakes, and a heroine on a mission to reclaim her life. While the structure and thematic depth left me wanting more, the characters made this an enjoyable read overall. If you love character-driven romances with a side of self-discovery, this one might be worth adding to your TBR.
