Book Review: A Proposal to Die For by Molly Harper – A Charming Cozy Mystery with a Grumpy – Sunshine Romance

If you’re looking for a cozy mystery with heart, humor, and a heroine you’ll wish was your best friend, A Proposal to Die For by Molly Harper absolutely delivers. This fast-paced mystery set in a luxury resort spa combines laugh-out-loud moments with genuine twists and a delightfully swoony grumpy/sunshine romance.

Let’s break down what made this such a fun read:

Jessamine Is the Best Friend We All Need

Jess (short for Jessamine) is the kind of character who feels instantly familiar. She’s smart, driven, a little quirky, and completely relatable. I loved her voice, her inner monologue, and especially her Big Book of Life Plans—a charming little character detail that added so much personality. Honestly, I’d love to flip through the whole book!

Grumpy Meets Sunshine (and It’s Adorable)

The romantic pairing in this story hits all the right notes. There’s tension, banter, and just the right amount of heart-melting sweetness. The grumpy/sunshine dynamic is one of my favorite tropes, and it’s executed perfectly here.

A Mystery That Kept Me Guessing

I’ve read enough mysteries to usually spot the twist coming—but not this time! The final reveal had me shocked, in the best way. There were just enough red herrings and suspicious characters to keep me engaged and second-guessing everyone’s motives.

A Spa Setting Worth Escaping To

The resort spa backdrop added a unique, cozy vibe to the story. It was the perfect contrast to the unfolding mystery, and I loved the mix of luxurious relaxation and looming danger.

Fast-Paced with One Small Quirk

The pacing was quick and energetic, which made the story hard to put down. My only (very minor) complaint? I wish the chapters were a bit shorter—but that’s mostly because I have a weird need to pause at chapter breaks, and these cliffhangers kept pulling me right back in.

Final Thoughts

I gave A Proposal to Die For 4 stars for its fun characters, clever twists, and utterly charming vibe. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a dash of romance and a heroine who actually feels like someone you’d grab coffee with, definitely give this one a try.

Have you read this one? Let me know what you thought—especially if you’re a fan of grumpy/sunshine pairings or quirky amateur sleuths!

I haven’t read romance in a while; trying to read thrillers as that is the genre I am writing in. Although this does sound interesting.
