📚 This Week in Books: Review Roundup

It’s been a week of twisty thrillers, slow-burn fantasy, and seaside second chances—and I’m loving every minute of it. Here’s a look at the books I devoured and what made them stand out (or stumble). Let’s get into it!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Medusa Protocol by Rob Hart (Thriller)

Okay, this book. This book! From the very first chapter, I was completely pulled in by the concept—Assassins Anonymous as a support group for killers trying to quit the habit? Genius. Rob Hart managed to take something dark and gritty and somehow make it heartfelt. The idea of killing as an addiction was explored so thoughtfully, and yet the pacing never lagged. It was fast, furious, and full of emotional gut punches.

I loved how deeply the theme of redemption ran through the story. Watching the main character struggle not just with the physical urges but also with the emotional weight of past choices was so compelling. And the found family element? That hit me in the feels. Every character brought something to the table, and their dynamic felt raw and real. This was easily a 5-star read for me and one I’ll be thinking about for a while.

⭐⭐⭐ The Summer You Were Mine by Jill Francis (Women’s Fiction)

This was such a cozy, nostalgic read—perfect for a beach bag or a lazy afternoon on the porch. The setting in Chiavari was beautifully described and gave me serious wanderlust. I appreciated the second-chance romance trope and the emotional maturity in how the characters navigated their past and present. Plus, I loved the neurodivergent rep in the female main character. It was refreshing to see those details handled with care and respect.

That said, the romance itself felt a little flat. I wanted to feel that crackle of connection between them, but it just wasn’t there for me. And the dialogue? It didn’t quite sing. Some of the conversations felt a bit too stiff or scripted, which pulled me out of the story. Still, it had heart and charm, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to someone looking for a sweet, low-drama love story in a gorgeous setting.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Realm of Thieves by Karina Halle (Fantasy)

After a bit of a slow start, this fantasy adventure swept me away. The world-building is rich without being overwhelming, and the magic system—simple but unique—fit the story perfectly. Brynla is a fierce, layered heroine, and Andor? Sigh. Their slow-burn chemistry kept me turning pages late into the night. There’s action, danger, a touch of forbidden romance, and yes—DRAGONS.

What surprised me most was how much I came to care about the characters. Their arcs felt earned, especially as the plot twisted and turned in unexpected ways. The ending had a jaw-dropping moment I did not see coming, and now I’m absolutely desperate for the next book. If you love fantasy with heart, heat, and high stakes, this one’s worth your time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds by Allison Brennan (Romantic Suspense)

This one had all the ingredients for a juicy summer escape—murder, mystery, romance, and an island resort setting that felt like a character in itself. I really enjoyed the balance between the suspense plot and the romantic subplot. It never leaned too far into either, keeping things tight and engaging throughout. Plus, the heroine was smart and resourceful without being overly perfect, which I appreciated.

Some pacing moments lagged a bit, especially in the middle, but overall I was hooked. The writing is crisp, the dialogue believable, and the stakes stayed high enough to keep me guessing. I’d definitely pick up more in this series if it continues—there’s something satisfying about a mystery that knows how to play with tropes and still surprise you.

You have read many brilliant books. A killer that wants to give up, I wouldn’t mind reading that.
