Boy, what a busy week it was. I alternated between work and appointments so I had none of my usual free time. I miss my free time when I have to give it up. At least all the appointments went very well, and I finally have my new glasses. I just have to get used to them.😂
Can you believe Monday will be the first of August? I can’t! But this weather has been so hot and humid for so long, I’m ready for Fall and a break from this heat. Still no word on the new AC. Apparently, there is a shortage of the brand we are supposed to be getting – which is the one that is balanced between cost and reliability. These shortages are so troublesome! We are very fortunate that our current AC keeps plugging away. Keeping those fingers-crossed!
How was your week?
This week St. Martin’s Press sent me a few ARC widgets which both look very compelling AND my Paul Hollywood signed copy of Bake arrived in the mail!
Introducing Antonia Scott–the most compelling and original detective since Lisbeth Salander–in Juan Gómez-Jurado’s Red Queen, the international bestselling thriller that has taken the world by storm.
Antonia Scott—the daughter of a British diplomat and a Spanish mother—has a gifted forensic mind, whose ability to reconstruct crimes and solve baffling murders is legendary. But after a personal trauma, she’s refused to continue her work or even leave her apartment.
Jon Gutierrez, a police officer in Bilbao—disgraced, suspended, and about to face criminal charges—is offered a chance to salvage his career by a secretive organization that works in the shadows to direct criminal investigations of a highly sensitive nature. All he has to do is succeed where many others have failed: Convince a recalcitrant Antonia to come out of her self-imposed retirement, protecting her and helping her investigate a new, terrifying case.
The case is a macabre, ritualistic murder—a teen-aged boy from a wealthy family whose body was found without a drop of blood left in it. But the murder is just the start. A high-ranking executive and daughter of one of the richest men in Spain is kidnapped, a crime which is tied to the previous murder. Behind them both is a hidden mastermind with even more sinister plans. And the only person with a chance to see the connections, solve the crimes and successfully match wits with the killer before tragedy strikes again…is Antonia Scott.
A thrilling new fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Blackwood!
Eighteen-year-old Victoria is a Wildblood. Kidnapped at the age of six and manipulated by the Exotic Lands Touring Company, she’s worked as a tour guide ever since with a team of fellow Wildbloods who take turns using their magic to protect travelers in a Jamaican jungle teeming with ghostly monsters.
When the boss denies Victoria an earned promotion to team leader in favor of Dean, her backstabbing ex, she’s determined to prove herself. Her magic may be the most powerful on the team, but she’s not the image the boss wants to send their new client, Thorn, a renowned goldminer determined to reach an untouched gold supply deep in the jungle.
Thorn is everything Victoria isn’t – confident, impossibly kind, and so handsome he leaves her speechless. And when he entrusts the mission to her, kindness turns to mutual respect, turns to affection, turns to love. But the jungle is treacherous, and between hypnotic river spirits, soul-devouring women that shed their skin like snakes, and her ex out for revenge, Victoria has to decide – is promotion at a corrupt company really what she wants?
A fierce, lush fantasy by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Blackwood, Wildblood tells the story of a girl who must find the strength to defeat the demons of the jungle as well as her own to find where she truly belongs.
“A lyrically told story of healing after trauma and finding home, Wildblood is as fierce as it is beautiful, and as hopeful as it is heartbreaking.” – Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf.
“Wildblood is a poignant, thrilling, emotionally complex story of love and sacrifice. Victoria’s tense journey through the haunted jungle is filled with terror and beauty, both supernatural and human, and will grip you until the very last page.” – L. Penelope, award-winning author of the Earthsinger Chronicles.
We were horrified by Big Brother 24 this week but liked the turn it took. We have a fantasy BB game going amongst our family, which is a lot of fun!
For our Saturday night movie viewing, we watched the new Paramount+ movie Honor Society. I liked the Ferris Bueller style of narration where the main character talks to the audience. The school counselor role was unfortunate which makes me sad, even though it did provide some laughs. It was as you would expect but with a twist, just as I hoped ❤️

August has come around so quickly but I also am looking forward to Autumn!!! I have a busy week this week as well with work and hospital appointments for my son so will be exhausted by Friday!!!
I don’t like hot, humid weather either, and much prefer it when the weather cools down a little. It is my 35th wedding anniversary tomorrow, so we will probably be going out for a meal.
I can’t wait to see what you think of Thank You For Listening! I’m waiting for the audiobook as I love Julia Whelan’s narration, she’s one of my favourites!
I can’t believe we are nearing the end of summer already! I am not a fan of heat and humidity either though, so the fall weather will be welcome here too.
I’m sorry to hear about your AC being back ordered. It is terrible how many shortages we have right now, but, better than being bombed, I guess. Do you like the style of your new glasses? I hope you enjoy your upcoming books, Tessa. I will be listening to Thank You For Listening by Julia Whelan next week, so will wait to read your review until after I listen to it. Have a great week.
I do like my new glasses. They are so light! They’ve just taken a bit of getting used to because of my astigmatism. It’s nice for my progressives to actually work again. I think you’ll enjoy Thank You for Listening. I sure did!
I have my fingers crossed for you, Tessa. I hope that the old AC holds out for you until the new one comes in. It’s no fun to be without air conditioning. I’m going to have to check out Honor Society, that looks like something I would enjoy. Have a great week, Tessa.
I’ll take a look at Honor Society and Wildblood seems interesting.
Sorry you had to give up so much of your free time…. I have so little, I understand your frustration completely! Glasses…. Oh gosh – I need to make an appointment for new ones as well!
Mine really weren’t strong enough anymore, so it’s nice to be able to see again 👀. Honor Society is an interesting movie. I liked how it twisted things up a bit from the expected.
My copy of Bake by Paul Holllywood arrived too, but I didn’t think to order a signed one! I’m glad you got one. I want to make the lime macaroons, which I think are gluten free, aren’t they?
They are gluten free – as are the chocolate ones and the Yule Log. I think many of the recipes could be converted too. The one-to-one flour works really well for cookies, in particular. The ones that will be a challenge are any that use yeast. Yeast is not very effective without the elasticity that gluten brings. I’m going to do some research because I know I’ve gotten a few different breads from the store that use yeast pretty effectively. So there must be a way.
I’m also looking forward to the cooler weather. I just hope the fall weather lasts longer than a few weeks where I live. I’m not ready for winter yet, lol. I hope your week is less busy and I hope you get used to your new glasses quickly! 😀
That’s how Fall is here too though the intense heat and humidity lessens after the official summer season. I would love it if we had a longer Fall. It’s my favorite time of year ❤️
I can’t believe that today is the first day of August either! Happy that there is still some AC!
Wildblood sounds really good! Hope you enjoy it.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
I can’t even imagine a world without AC. Though when we first moved down south (many moons ago) my car did not have air conditioning. I don’t know how I survived.

I hear you! Medical appointments are so draining.
Our first one tomorrow!!!

Congratulations! I hope you all have some nice plans to celebrate ❤️

I finished it this morning and I really liked it. It’s got a lot of cool aspects that I wasn’t expecting.
Brilliant can’t wait for the audiobook!
I wonder how it is on audio. It could be even better in that format.
Looks like you have a busy week/August ahead. Hope the AC holds up till the new one comes.
Me too! Fingers-crossed 🤞
Glad your appointments went well, and hopefully your week is quieter this week 😊
I hope so!
I like Paul Hollywood, enjoy your autographed book 🙂 Super cool. I hope you have a great week ahead!
I saw a virtual book event with him too. He’s a lot of fun as a speaker.
I hope this is a more relaxed week for you. Fingers crossed that AC keeps working! Love the PH book, Wildblood looks good too.
Paul Hollywood is fun to watch on the Great British Bake-off. I look forward to figuring out how to convert some of those recipes to gluten-free 😋

I love Fall ❤️

I can’t believe it’s August, either! But, I’m more than ready for Autumn. I’ve not heard of Red Queen and can’t wait to see your review.
Have a great week, Tessa💜

I hope your AC arrives soon. We don’t ever have shortage of AC as they are always in demand in India. I hope you have relaxing week.
Thank you!
I also got that widget for Wildblood. Sounds a little different, and I like that. Keeping my fingers crossed for your A/C!
It does, doesn’t it? I’m very hopeful 🤞

Hope your week is wonderful too!
The summer has definitely flown by. I start back at work in September so I hope August feels longer than July did.
I’m very ready for fall! I don’t have AC at home or in the car I use for work. July was brutal. I hope you have a great week!
I can’t even imagine a world without AC. Though when we first moved down south (many moons ago) my car did not have air conditioning. I don’t know how I survived.
