Let’s Discuss Bookworms vs Readers and Bookish Phobias

I haven’t done this post in a few weeks so I chose two questions for today!

Do you consider yourself a bookworm or a reader?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

My Answer:

I consider myself a reader. If I’m being completely honest, I never understood the term bookworm and really I don’t want to be worm-like. Now, bookdragon I can get behind but only because I love dragons. I don’t think it really makes sense either, but it has dragon in it so I love it.

What do you consider yourself – a bookworm or a reader?

Do you have a bookish phobia?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

My Answer:

Here are a few book phobias that I got from Book Riot:

BIBLIOPHOBIA

This is basically a fear of books. It could manifest as the fear of reading a particular type of book, reading out loud in public or even holding a book. It could also manifest as a hatred of books because a person feels the books might have a negative impact on him or his community and this has led to censorship and burning of books throughout history.

ABIBLIOPHOBIA

This is the fear of running out of reading material. I know this is like every book lover’s greatest fear. But thankfully books are easily accessible now more than they were in the last century so get to reading bookworms.

PAPYROPHOBIA

Papyrophobia is the fear of paper. It could be the fear of touching paper, being cut by it or writing on paper. Basically, if you have this phobia you won’t be able to read physical books. But thankfully there are ebooks and audiobooks now so someone suffering from this can still read. Although in our everyday life some form of paper is used, from the shopping mall bags to postage stamps and tissues, so this is a very debilitating and life-limiting phobia.

LOGOPHOBIA

The fear of words. This could be the fear of a specific word or several words or the fear of saying certain words. Most likely the words are associated with a traumatic experience.

ALOGOTRANSIPHOBIA

This is the fear of being without something to read on public transport. I know it sucks when you are stuck in traffic, a long drive or flight without anything to read but I was surprised to find out this is a phobia. It was created humorously in the 1970s by a novelist.

Some Others

Graphophobia (fear of writing), Sophophobia (fear of learning or knowledge) and Metrophobia (fear of poetry)

Do I Have Any Of These?

The short answer is no. I don’t have any phobias at all except for Ophidiophobia but there is nothing bookish about that. I just thought it was interesting to look at possible bookish phobias.

It’s been a very busy few weeks. I skipped this post a couple of weeks ago because I was down again with very bad allergies. There’s been something floating around this fall that my body has a very bad reaction to. Full disclosure though, I have a very bad dust mite allergy (the highest reaction on the allergy test) and a not-as-bad-but-still-there cat allergy – so I’m always under attack and take a few different prescribed meds. Seasonal allergens just tip the scales of my normal balance between allergens and anti-histamines. It’s fun to be me! 😂

The fundraiser I was helping with went very well. It was a beautiful day and people had a very good time. It’s called a food fight but it was basically a Taste of Davidson with a chance to vote on your favorite dish./restaurant. Who doesn’t like an all you can eat event with good food ?!?

I’m sorry you haven’t been well with allergies, hope the meds are helping! I don’t mind what I’m called as long as it’s not nasty! 😂

      😂 This is very true!

Hope you are feeling better! I’m going to an allergist in a couple of weeks to get some more answers for myself. I chose bookworm because a reader could be anyone who reads and our reading is a lot more than that.

      What a wonderful point Bonnie!

I don’t like the sound or the connotations of a bookworm so I’m claiming reader! As far as a phobia? I don’t think I have any but I do panic when I find myself panicking if I’m in my car without an audiobook queued up (never happens now that I have a car with Bluetooth syncing).

That bluetooth connection between your phone and your car is amazing, isn’t it?

Best invention ever! I was driving an old 2003 Lexus that I loved and it was totaled in an accident. I was bereft until I got its replacement and it had Bluetooth. Yes, I always wanted that but was unwilling to let my beloved car go. Now? Why did I wait so long!

I have ABIBLIOPHOBIA – running out of books to read, that would my nightmare.

I hope you feel better soon. I’m a book reader and I try to read all books so in that term I’m fine being called bookworm but when you look at all the books on my TBR, I’m bookdragon as I keep hoarding books like they hoard treasure.

So I looked up the definition of “bookworm” and it says: a person devoted to reading. That is definitely me. I read or listen whenever and wherever I can. I have not phobias that I can think of. I have some healthy fears like everyone else though. I’m glad your fundraiser went well, Tessa. What were you raising money for? I hope you have a great upcoming week.

In the days pre- Kindle I definitely had the fear of running out of books, particularly on holiday. I remember getting through 10 books (which went in my suitcase) and having to search for an English bookshop on Rhodes because I’d run out of books. Stressful. Now I take 2 Kindles on holiday.

I love my Kindle for vacations. It’s perfect!
