Fire and Bone by Kathy Reichs #BookReview #ThrillerThursday

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a twisty, unputdownable thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who finds herself at the center of a Washington, DC, arson investigation that spawns deepening levels of mystery and, ultimately, violence. Always apprehensive about working fire scenes, Tempe is called to Washington, DC, to analyze the victims of a deadly blaze and sees her misgivings justified. The devastated building is in Foggy Bottom, a neighborhood with a colorful past and present, and Tempe becomes suspicious about the property’s ownership when she delves into its history. The pieces start falling into place strangely and quickly, and, sensing a good story, Tempe teams with a new ally, telejournalist Ivy Doyle. Soon the duo learns that back in the thirties and forties the home was the hangout of a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Though interesting, this fact seems irrelevant—until the son of a Foggy Bottom gang member is shot dead at his home in an affluent part of the district. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? So many questions. As Tempe and Ivy dig deeper, an arrest is finally made. Then another Foggy Bottom Gang-linked property burns to the ground, claiming one more victim. Slowly, Tempe’s instincts begin pointing to the obvious: somehow, her moves since coming to Washington have been anticipated, and every path forward seems to bring with it a lethal threat.

Fire and Bones by Kathy Reichs

  • One-word review:  Perplexing

  • Rating:  5🌟s

My Top-Ten-style book review:

10. Fire and Bone, the 23rd book in the Temperance Brennan series, stands out with its unique narrative that can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.  While it may not mirror the TV series Bones, which was inspired by this book series, it offers a distinct reading experience.

9. The setting is the perfect backdrop for the story. The Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, DC, was named for its lingering fog, which has all sorts of metaphorical implications. And the area’s history is fascinating and well-detailed in the story.

8. The writing in Fire and Bone is not just concise and fluid, but also tantalizing, adding to the suspense and making it difficult to put the book down.  The soft cliffhangers at the end of each chapter are a delightful touch.

7. The story is full of details that speak to Reich’s excellent research ability and give the story an authenticity it wouldn’t otherwise have.

6. I would have loved it if the historical details had tied more to the story. I thought they were going to, but they just didn’t.

5. The mystery is full of twists and turns up to the end. I love how it kept me guessing, and I didn’t even come close to solving it alone.

4.  The entertainment value of Fire and Bone, and the series as a whole, is remarkably high.  When I delve into a Temperance Brennan story, I know I’m in for a thrilling ride that will keep me engrossed long into the night.

3. The character development of even the minor characters is exceptional.  Each character is incredibly unique and not at all a shadow of a stereotype that I see much too often in this genre.

2. I love how different each case and book are and the personal challenges that are part of the story. It keeps the series fresh even though it’s 23 books in.

1. Temperance Brenna is a character that I am endlessly fascinated by.  She is fiercely independent, arguably flawed, and endlessly determined.  She’s a character I can quickly identify with while also marveling at all the places she goes and the cases she gets involved in.

I’d love to find time to start this series. I’ve also never watched the TV series, but I know it was pretty popular.

I keep wanting to pick up this series, because I am very curious about it. I loved the show Bones, so I’m curious how similar or not the two stories are. Happy reading!

Thanks for the review, Tessa. My husband and I have started buddy-reading long series when we travel. The benefit is that if we like the first book, we don’t have to put much thought into the next and can just keep downloading! I’m going to favorite this for when we finish the series we’re consuming now. Thanks!
