Rosie Lachlan, recovering from a life-saving heart transplant, becomes obsessed with the idea that her donor was Daphne Thorne, the late wife of famous author Morgan Thorne. Convinced that having Daphne’s heart means she and Morgan are destined to be together, Rosie uses an anonymous messaging service to connect with him under the guise of learning more about her donor. As their correspondence deepens, Rosie uncovers disturbing rumors about Morgan’s marriage and begins to question whether his charm masks a darker side. With her obsession growing and the truth about Daphne’s death unraveling, Rosie must confront whether her heart—and her choices—will lead to love, heartbreak, or something far more dangerous.
My Thoughts
The premise of Cross My Heart is as dark and intriguing as it gets, and Collins executes it beautifully. The first half of the book had me completely hooked with its romantic tension and slow unraveling of Rosie’s obsession. I couldn’t tell what was real, what was imagined, or how far Rosie would go to get what she wanted. It’s deliciously unsettling.
The second half, though, is where the real magic happens. As the twists pile up, Rosie becomes a more layered and complex character. Her choices are messy and flawed, but they make sense in the context of her trauma and yearning for connection. Add Morgan—a character whose charm and darkness are impossible to separate—and you’ve got a story that’s equal parts psychological thriller and emotional gut-punch.

With its fast pace, unreliable characters, and shocking twists, Cross My Heart is an addictive read that will keep you guessing until the very last page.
