Murder, Drama, and Reality TV Chaos – The Really Dead Wives of New Jersey by Astrid Dahl

If you’ve ever found yourself glued to the drama of The Real Housewives franchise, imagining what would happen if things took a deadly turn, Astrid Dahl’s The Really Dead Wives of New Jersey is the book you didn’t know you needed. Equal parts murder mystery and guilty-pleasure drama, this novel brings the glitz, glam, and gossip of reality TV to life with a sinister twist.

The Plot

Set against the backdrop of a Housewives-style reality show in New Jersey, the story kicks off when a cast member is found dead. As the cameras roll and accusations fly, it becomes clear that everyone—yes, everyone—has secrets to hide. What follows is a whirlwind of backstabbing, betrayal, and plenty of juicy twists as the remaining cast tries to figure out whodunit… while keeping their lip gloss perfectly intact, of course.

What I Loved

One of the book’s biggest strengths is its clever concept. Dahl does a fantastic job capturing the over-the-top personalities and high-stakes drama of reality TV. You can practically hear the champagne glasses clinking and the catty one-liners flying as you read.

The murder mystery itself is gripping, with enough twists and red herrings to keep you guessing until the very end. Just when you think you’ve figured out who the killer is, Dahl throws another curveball that has you questioning everything. It’s addictive in the same way a Housewives marathon is—you just have to see what happens next.

The Struggles

That said, the drama does come with a downside. The cast of characters is large and larger-than-life, making it hard to remember who’s who, especially when the plot gets particularly twisty. I found myself flipping back a few times just to keep track of everyone, which pulled me out of the story here and there.

Still, the overall experience was worth it. The chaos felt intentional—after all, isn’t that what we love about reality TV?

Final Thoughts

The Really Dead Wives of New Jersey is a fast-paced, entertaining read that’s perfect for fans of juicy mysteries and guilty-pleasure TV. While the sheer number of characters and drama may be a bit overwhelming at times, the book’s unique concept and suspenseful storytelling more than make up for it.

Who Should Read This?

If you love murder mysteries with a twist, books like Big Little Lies or Knives Out, or just can’t resist the guilty pleasure of reality TV, you’ll love this one. Grab a glass of wine (or sparkling water), settle into your coziest spot, and prepare for a wild ride!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
